Immigration Awareness Week comes to Northern Arizona

Comprehensive immigration reform is currently the hot topic in Washington D.C.
Republicans realize they need to approve a deal in order to win back the Latino support they lost in recent national elections.
Meanwhile, Democrats were called on the carpet for not passing some kind of immigration reform, especially when they had the numbers in Congress after the 2008 election.
The Obama Administration in particular has been taken to task by Latino leaders for deporting record numbers of immigrants during Obama’s first term in office.
Residents in Northern Arizona will get an up-close look at the many aspects of immigration — from law enforcement issues to the human cost of crossing the southern U.S. border — when the Latin American Studies program at Northern Arizona University presents “Immigration Awareness Week” April 8-13 in various locations in the region.
Robert A. Neustadt, professor of Spanish and director of Latin American Studies at NAU, said this is the first year the university will host the event. The event traces its roots to the most recent trip this past year to the border by Neustadt and his students.
“It was a real powerful trip. We met with immigrants, with landowners, with people in the desert who needed help,” he said. “It’s always a real transformative experience. But after students went there this year, it was their idea to put together Immigration Awareness Week. They had a powerful experience, came back and wanted to do that.”
Neustadt said a lot of work has gone into planning the event and while he couldn’t commit to making this an annual event at NAU, “It depends on the students. I won’t say this will be the first of an annual Immigration Awareness Week at NAU, but I wouldn’t be surprised.”

The program begins with the screening of the documentary film “Crossing Arizona” at 1 p.m. Monday, April 8 in the Liberal Arts Building, Room 120 at NAU. The film features interviews with migrants, ranchers, government officials and humanitarian workers. Director Dan De Vivo will answer questions following the screening. A photo/art exhibit featuring the works of Michael Hyatt and Rex Koningsor will open at 4:30 p.m. Monday, April 8 on the third floor of the Riles Building at NAU. The opening will including the presentation of “Toe Tags” by Koningsor, with the exhibit also featuring photography and art by students from NAU and the Flagstaff Arts and Leadership Academy who have traveled to the border. The exhibit will continue through April 26.
West Cosgrove, director of education at the Kino Border Initiative, will present “Globalization: It Depends on Where You Stand” at 5:30 p.m. Monday, April 8 on the third floor of the Riles Building at NAU. He will talk about his two decades of experience working on the U.S-Mexico border in El Paso/Juarez and Nogales, Sonora.
The program will continue at noon Tuesday, April 9 with a discussion of the “Border Songs” CD at the NAU Bookstore. The CD is a compilation of spoken word and music addressing the impact of of U.S border policy. It was produced by Neustadt and Chuck Cheesman, who will describe the project along with other contributors. Filmmakers Dan De Vivo and Valeria Fernandez will present their documentary “Two Americans” at 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 9 in Liberal Arts 120 at NAU. The film features Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio and an immigrant family arrested in his jurisdiction. Members of the family profiled will also attend the program. A screening of the PBS “Need to Know” documentaries will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 10 at the Gardner Auditorium in the W. A. Franke College of Business at NAU. Directed by John Carlos Frey, “Crossing the Line at the Border” (parts 1 and 2) examines the Border Patrol’s alleged use of excessive force in an effort to curb illegal immigration.
Mike Wilson, a member of the Tohono O’odham nation and a human rights activist, will talk about “Border Patrol in Indian Country: Threat to Native Sovereignty?” at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 10 in the Native American Cultural Center at NAU. He will speak about his humanitarian work in the Arizona desert with Humane Borders and his duties as policy director at the Border Action Network.
The screening of the film “Sleep Dealer,” a science-fiction film depicting the exploitation of a virtual labor force across a fortified U.S.-Mexico border, will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. Thursday, April 11 in Liberal Arts Building, Room 120 at NAU. The film will be followed by discussion facilitated by students in Professor Judith Costello’s course, “Cinema and Borders: Race, Migration, and Diaspora in Film and Media.”
The Arizona DREAMers group will give a presentation on “Arizona DREAMers in Action: Undocumented, Unafraid, Unapologetic. Demanding citizenship for 11 million DREAMers” at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 11 in the third floor of the Riles Building at NAU.
NAU student Angel Arzola will present “Red Bull: Immigration’s Main Sponsor” at 12:30 p.m. Friday, April 12 in the Liberal Arts Building, Room 136 at NAU.
The screening of the documentary film “The Fence,” followed by “Flor de Muertos,” will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, April 12 in the Liberal Arts Building, Room 136 at NAU. Directed by Rory Kennedy, the HBO documentary “The Fence” investigates the impact of the U.S. government’s $3 billion border fence expansion. “Flor de Muertos,” directed by Danny Vinik, is an artistic film examining immigration issues and border culture through the lens of Tucson’s All Souls Procession and the music of the Americana/alternative band Calexico. A trailer of the film can be seen at www.flordemuertos.com/trailer.php
The screening of “Inocente” will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, April 12 in classroom No. 7 on the Flagstaff Arts & Leadership Academy campus, 3401 N. Fort Valley Road.
The film focuses on Inocente, age 15, who refuses to let her dream of becoming an artist be caged by her life as an undocumented immigrant forced to live homeless for the past nine years. The film won an Academy Award this year for Best Documentary Short Subject.
A Zumba Master Dance Class will be held from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Saturday, April 13 at the Health & Learning Center at NAU. The $5 donation will benefit No More Deaths.

La Semana de Conciencia de la Inmigración llega al Norte de Arizona

La reforma inmigratoria comprensiva es el tópico caliente hoy dia en Washington D.C. Los Republicanos se dan cuenta que necesitan aprobar un arreglo para ganar de vuelta el apoyo Latino que pierdieron en las recientes elecciones nacionales. Mientras eso, los Democratas se les critica por no haber pasado alguna reforma migratoria, especialmente cuando tuvieron el control del Congreso despues de la elección de 2008. Se le critica la Administración Obama en particular por lideres Latinos por haber deportado números históricos de inmigrantes durante el primer término de Obama en el oficio.
Residentes en el Norte de Arizona podrán ver de cerca muchos de los aspectos de la inmigración — desde los asuntos justiciales al costo humano de cruzar la frontera sureña de los E.U. — cuando el programa de Estudios Latinoamericanos en Northern Arizona University presenta “La Semana de Conciencia de la Inmigración” el 8-13 de abril en varios sitios de la región.
Robert A. Neustadt, profesor del Español y director de Estudios Latinoamericanos en NAU, dijo que este es el primer año que la Universidad va a server como amfitrión del evento. El evento tiene sus raices en el viaje mas reciente a la frontera de Neustadt y sus estudiantes. “Era un viaje impresionante. Nos juntemos con inmigrantes, con terratenientes, con gente en el desierto que necesitaba ayuda,” dijo. “Es siempre una experiencia bastante transformativa. Pero despues de que los estudiantes fueron allá este año, era su idea organizar La Semana de Conciencia de la Inmigración. Tuvieron una experiencia fuerte, regresaron, y quisiron hacer eso.” Neustadt dijo que ha visto mucho trabajo en la planificación del evento y aunque no se compromete hacer esto un evento anual en NAU, dijo que “Depende de los estudiantes. No digo que esto será el primero de un evento anual en NAU, pero no me sorprenderia.”
