Arts Participation for Healthy Aging with Heather Mulder
Free Talk: Tuesday, 10/3, 4:00 – 5:00 pmJoin us for a special talk featuring Heather Mulder, Associate Director Outreach Research at Banner Alzheimer’s Institute/ Banner Sun Health Research Institute.

Research shows that participating in the arts may improve health, cognitive function, memory and improve self-esteem and well-being. Heather will share her expertise and knowledge and how she has seen innovative programming increase the quality of life for people living with dementia and those who care about them. Q and A to follow along with an update from our CEO, Julie Richard, about Sedona Arts Center’s development of a new Creative Aging Program.

Online Class: Introduction to Creative Aging for Teaching Artists with Tessa Windt
Free Online class: Saturday, 10/7, 10:00 – 11:30 amThis online session for artists teaching in all media aims to provide an experiential, reflective and practical introduction to the role of teaching artists in the field of Creative Aging.  This is an invitation to consider among peers how to translate your creative and teaching practices to new populations, new contexts and new perspectives. This class will be delivered via the Zoom online meeting platform.

Heather Mulder’s talk listed above is a pre-requisite for this session.

Sense, Sensibility & Surrealism: An Ekphrastic Writing Workshop  with Camille LeFevre
Tuesdays, Nov. 7 and 14Ekphrasis is broadly defined as writing about or inspired by works of art. In this two-part ekphrastic writing workshop, created for Sedona Art Center’s exhibition “Contemporary Surrealism,” the artwork is our prompt for lively, sensory adventures into the realm of ekphrastic writing. Read and discuss a range of ekphrastic poems, and write and revise your own as we bring our own psyches and experiences to bear on a surrealist poetics of word and image. Then, let’s share! Students have the option to participate during a public reading on Friday, Nov. 17 at 4:00 pm.

Crash Courses give beginners the opportunity to try something new without having to make an investment in art supplies. Materials are provided for students to use during the class.
Watercolor Crash Course: Capturing Luminous Light with Betty Carr
Class: Wed – Thurs, 10/4 – 10/5This class welcomes beginners who have some drawing experience and want to learn how to paint with watercolor, as well as the more experienced painters who want to learn more watercolor techniques. With materials included, all barriers have been removed so that you can explore the fun of painting!

Painting Crash Course with Gretchen Lopez
Fri – Sat, 11/10 – 11/11Learn the basics of starting a painting from beginning to finish working in either water-soluble oil, traditional oil, or acrylics. We supply the materials, you supply your creativity! With materials included, all barriers have been removed so that you can explore the fun of painting! All you bring is yourself and clothing that you could get some paint on!

Oil Sketching at Tlaquepaque, Sedona with Gretchen Lopez
Thurs – Fri, Oct 5 – 6All the joys of Mexican color and architecture can be experienced here right here in Sedona.  Join me for a Plein Air journey as we explore beautiful Tlaquepaque Arts & Shopping Village in Autumn!  I will show you how to work with oil sketches to gather information on sight and complete larger paintings in your studio!

Zen Creativity: The Art of Life and Death with Alok Hsu Kwang-han

In this workshop we engage in Zen creativity to explore the art of life and death. Paper Paintings: Fashion Plate Portraits with Elizabeth St. Hilaire
Tues – Thurs, Oct 17 – 19 (3 Spots Available!)Learn to collage fashion plate portraits in a variety of mixed media. Create your own hand-painted collage papers. During this comprehensive 3-day workshop you will learn a unique figurative mixed media collage technique.  Emphasis will be on defining form using light and shadow, and treating every torn tidbit of paper as a brush stroke.  Students will create impressionistic collages that look like paintings.

Plein Air/Studio Demonstration with Michele Usibelli
Saturday, Oct 28Join Michele Usibelli to watch her demonstrate the day before her 3-day workshop begins. Michele will demonstrate her process for creating work in the studio from plein air work and photo reference. This demonstration will be a wonderful overview of the painting process, a learning experience for collectors and painters alike.

Texture-Color-Feeling with Jan Sitts
Thurs – Sat, Nov 2 – 4Jan’s experience and enthusiasm create an atmosphere of fun and spontaneity inspiring new directions and discovery through innovative combinations of design and materials. By combining aggressive textures and unusual mediums with various “raw” materials in the abstract painting we get surprising results. The layering method yields a magnetism that is particular to mixed media.

Poetry of Grief and Healing with Jodie Hollander
Monday, Nov 13For centuries, creating art, and writing poetry in particular, has served as a form of healing for hurt, pain and grief. In this workshop, we’ll discuss examples of celebrated poems that tackle these difficult topics and study effective techniques for channeling our pain into poetry.
