Sedona Arts Center — Even More Art Classes and Workshops to Explore!

This 4-day workshop will provide a series of experiments to manifest the realization of personal imagery.  Exercises will include drawing and markmaking sketches, using a viewfinder and an iPhone to discover compositional ideas. We will explore finding personal color, layering concepts and personal writing assignments.  Questions to discuss include:  “How do you start a painting?” – “What do you do when you are stuck?” – and “How do you know when a painting is finished?”

The material focus in this workshop is R&F Pigment Sticks, Oil Paint, Cold Wax, Drawing Materials and more.

Lori will provide all paint, wax medium and multi-media supplies and reference materials – there is a $40 materials fee payable directly to the instructor on the first day.  Students may bring additional supplies if they wish.

• Experience: Beginning to Intermediate. Some prior drawing experience is required.

Learn the structure, values and shapes to build gorgeous flowers in your paintings.  We’ll take this in a step-by step approach, as we mix color and learn to compose.

Every Monday 4 – 7 pm, and students may attend one Open Studio per week (without instructor) to work on class projects.

Through demonstration and one-on-one instruction, students will learn to throw a variety of forms on the potter’s wheel or techniques to create hand-built works. Slab roller, extruder and forms are also available to create functional and decorative pieces.

In this six-hour workshop you will learn to transfer images from various sources such as magazines, photographs, and ink or laser jet images onto cradled wood board and canvas utilizing transfer paper. We will explore various methods of layering images using acrylic paint, stamps, and other mixed media to create dimensional effects.

The second day of the workshop will include working directly with the live model in a variety of undraped, partially draped and nude poses. You will do lots of paint sketching, gestural drawing and finger painting techniques. On the third day, be prepared to paint looser, bolder, freer, lighter and more intuitively. The model will transform into one of Burridge’s “Lounge Ladies” with imaginative sets and playful costumes!

Learn to paint glass and achieve the impression and beauty of transparency.  It is all in the technique of your brush, how you mix color and contrast of values!

Paul creates a fun, enjoyable and friendly environment to learn and grow. You will paint en plein air and in the studio, not to reproduce what you see but to interpret the scene, using your creativity and inspiration. Each day will include demonstrations and lots of one-on-one instruction, as he circulates through the class working with each student at their own level.

Your brushes are an extension of you.  Gain more confidence in your paintings by understanding all the techniques which go into the handling of your brushes!

With materials included, all barriers have been removed so that you can explore the fun of painting! All you bring is yourself and clothing that you could get some paint on!

The workshop will cover my basic learnings over a lifetime of experimenting with paint. Highlighting design, color mixing, paint application, creative mark making, what can we do with lighting while understanding the basics of overall image capturing to showcase personality on canvas.

Bill Cramer teaches various approaches to working on-site and how to efficiently compose and complete plein air paintings. Emphasis will be placed on how to effectively translate the often complex three dimensional landscape onto a two dimensional plane using thumbnail sketches, limited palettes and the thoughtful use of colors, values, shapes, edges and textures. Further emphasis will be placed on the creative process to make paintings that are more than strict representations of the landscape we see. Are you “dyeing” to create and bind your own handmade journal that invites you to have an anything goes mindset? To begin this course we will hand sew the pages of our journal together. Then, we will experiment with dyeing the pages as a way to warm up to our new journal and push aside the fear of the blank page. Click “Learn More” below for a detailed class description.

• No experience is necessary – just the student’s willingness to learn to paint with watercolors & ink.

Kids will learn and have fun exploring the many techniques of watercolors and ink to create their own unique paintings. Each student will leave with a fun body of work and knowledge of watercolors.

• The first day, you will paint ‘with ME. You will learn how to paint: mountains, fields, trees, rocks, skies, clouds and more. I will demonstrate each part on separate sheets of paper, then allow you time to practice under my watchful eye. The beauty of this format is you don’t have to worry about a finished painting in the morning as we just practice a variety of watercolor techniques on loose sheets of 140# watercolor paper.
• In the second session we will put all the parts together in a new effort and have a completed painting at the end of the day. This day you will learn the principles of focal point, value change, unity factors while you create a finished work of art. This format is great for those that want to learn in a step-by-step manner. This process will provide a comprehensive amount of information. You will receive a great foundation that then can be applied to all your future paintings.
• The online format allows you the ability to see the recorded demos again, while you can pause, fast forward, screen shot, your way to success. (You can even simulcast on your smart TV!)

Whether a world traveler or a homebody, a sense of place naturally finds its way into our painting. Social isolation has allowed us to consider our internal space more than ever. In this 3-day workshop we will examine the concept of “place” by painting the essence of landscape-both internal and external. You will practice abstract acrylic painting techniques that are connected to the spirit in nature. Abstract painting is often misconstrued as an unrecognizable style of painting where no standard rules of perspective, color theory, or composition exist. We will dispel that myth.
