FREE Painting Demonstration in the Fine Art Gallery
November 30, 2017 – 3 to 5pm
A 24 x 30 commissioned painting by Gretchen Lopez is first prize in the Arts Center’s 60th Anniversary raffle project. Gretchen will paint anything the winner desires, a portrait, landscape, pet portrait or still life. Think ‘creative’. Gretchen will be teaching aspects of her process for a free two hour demonstration in the Gallery Thursday, November 30th from 3 to 5 pm. Come see master artist Gretchen Lopez painting live, in person, on November 30 for a memorable experience!

Gretchen Lopez
Gretchen’s works are inspired, not only by her love of painting, but from her ethnic heritage, teaching and the world around her. As a tenth generation native of California, Gretchen is a descendant of the First Spanish Settlers and the California Rancheros, with roots stemming from the Chumash and Apache. Her work is inspired by this rich ethnic heritage. But it is the vibrant color and spontaneity which are expressed in the gentle beauty of the Native and Hispanic people, she paints, and by combining the traditional with the contemporary, she is able to paint with freedom. Gretchen lives in Northern Arizona, where she continues to pursue her love of painting, and has taught at the Sedona Arts center for over 15 years.

Glazing Crash Course with Cyndi Thau
December 12–21, 2017

Color, Light, Shadow, Translucency – These are the ingredients that we will work with to create a beautiful painting for you to take home. Our main subject will be flowers and using the glazing technique we will apply thin layer upon layer of oil paint to achieve the depth and translucency associated with all things in nature.

Students will be taught how to choose a composition, transfer it to the canvas and then begin the process of laying in color. This class will be taught in four sessions to allow for critical drying time between layers. We will focus on light and shadow, paying attention to brushwork and edges as we build up the design. Paintings will be done on a gallery wrap canvas and students will be given a choice of images to work from. Attention to detail is important and even more critical is the use of light and shadow to form the shapes while laying in color to complete the design.

Each of the four sessions will begin with a demonstration and instruction followed by individual attention. We will discuss composition, color mixing, edges, blending and values. At the end of the fourth session each student will have a beautifully completed painting to grace your wall at home.

Class meets Tuesdays and Thursdays 1–4 pm

December 16, 7:30pm

A poetry slam is like a series of high-energy, three-minute one-person plays. Slam poetry is an art form that allows written page poets to share their work alongside theatrical performers, hip-hop artists and lyricists. All types of poetry are welcome on the stage, from street-wise hip-hop and narrative performance poems, to political rants and introspective confessionals. Any poem is a “slam” poem if performed in a competition. All poets get three minutes per round to entertain and inspire the audience with their creativity.

All poets are welcome to compete for the $75 grand prize and $25 second-place prize. To compete in the slam, poets will need three original poems, each lasting no longer than three minutes. No props, costumes nor musical accompaniment are permitted. The poets are judged Olympics-style by five members of the audience selected at random at the beginning of the slam.

Poets in the Sedona Poetry Slam come from as far away as Phoenix, Tucson and Flagstaff, competing against adult poets from Sedona and Cottonwood, college poets from Northern Arizona University, and youth poets from Sedona Red Rock High School.
