The Inspired Abstract – Online Workshop
An Online Workshop with Julie Bernstein Engelmann
April 12 – 15, 2021
This four-day workshop gives you a powerful foundation for abstract painting. Using layers, you’ll be guided to enter the painting process naturally, develop a deep and luscious visual space, and weave into it exquisite brush-marks that grow from a personally meaningful inspiration. You’ll learn to see the spirit in your painting and gently enhance it, so it can shine powerfully.
A focus of this workshop is to find ease in bringing your mid-process “beautiful abstract mess” to completion. You’ll create two acrylic paintings that embody meaning, naturalness, and spatial depth and flow – qualities that lift an abstract painting from amateur to professional. The schedule allows for those who wish to work outside of the class more time to do so.

Paper Paintings: Fabulous Florals
An Online Workshop with Elizabeth St Hilaire
April 26 – 28, 2021
Students will draw florals from their own still-life setup or photograph; modifying it to create a compelling, fun composition. We’ll cover how to paint your life drawing with full range of fun, bright colors and shading. You will then learn how to hand-paint your own collage papers through a series of gel plate mono-printing techniques in the color palette inspired by your underpainting. After creating your ‘paper palette’ you will learn various techniques for tearing and applying the paper in a ‘painterly’ manner. Elizabeth will also cover how to keep your pieces perfectly flat without cockling and how to vary your paper brush marks strategically in size and shape.

During this comprehensive three-day workshop you will learn a unique figurative mixed media collage technique. Emphasis will be on defining form using light and shadow, and treating every torn tidbit of paper as a brush stroke. Students will create impressionistic collages that look like paintings.
