The Arizona Department of Transportation advises drivers to plan for an extended full closure of McConnell Drive under Interstate 17 in Flagstaff during the spring and summer while crews continue work to replace the McConnell Bridge under I-17.

McConnell Drive under I-17 will be closed in both directions around-the-clock April 13 through mid-August. Crews will open the roadway on nights and weekends when they are not working.

For access to Northern Arizona University during construction, drivers can use Milton Road to University Drive to Knoles Drive. For access to west Flagstaff, drivers can use Milton Road to Forest Meadows Street to Beulah Boulevard.

With reduced traffic volumes and remote learning at NAU, ADOT and its contractor decided to accelerate the project to widen and improve the bridge. This will result in full closures of McConnell Drive this month instead of waiting for the summer. This will allow the project to finish ahead of schedule and potentially eliminate the need for intermittent closures originally planned during the fall semester this year.

The project involves a full bridge deck replacement, bridge widening and sidewalk construction on the north side of McConnell Drive and is scheduled for completion scheduled for fall 2020. Learn more on the project webpage.
