BRIEFING STATEMENT

2019 Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV)

Issue: 2019 Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV)
Office: DOI Office of Occupational Safety & Health
NPS Office of Public Health/NPS Office of Law Enforcement, Security, and Emergency Services
Bureaus Affected: All
Distribution: Unlimited
Date: January 28, 2020

Background:

  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is closely monitoring developments around a novel (new) coronavirus (2019-nCoV) first identified in Wuhan, China that is continuing to expand.
Current Status:
  • More than two thousand confirmed cases in China, as well as a growing number of additional cases in other countries, including the US (5 cases). Over 50 deaths have been reported (no US fatalities).
Key Points:
  • There is no evidence of ongoing transmission (person-to-person spread) of 2019-nCoV in the US.
  • While CDC considers this to be a very serious public health threat, based on current information, the immediate health risk is considered low at this time.
Recommendations:
  • Everyday preventive actions are always recommended to help prevent the spread of viruses, particularly during flu and respiratory disease season, including:
    • Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
    • Avoid touching eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
    • Stay home when sick and avoid close contact with people who are sick.
    • Cover cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
    • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
  • If you are experiencing symptoms such as cough, fever, shortness of breath, follow up with your healthcare provider and be sure to mention any recent travel.
  • Travel: There are no travel precautions within the US. CDC has raised the travel notice for China to Level 3: Avoid Nonessential Travel.
  • Guidance for first responders:
    • Indications of high risk for 2019-nCoV infection include: Fever AND symptoms of lower respiratory infection, i.e. cough, difficulty breathing AND travel from China within the last 14 days, or close contact with an individual with confirmed infection or high risk of infection.
    • Patients/Individuals at risk should wear surgical masks if showing symptoms.
    • Healthcare workers/EMS should use standard, contact, and airborne precautions, including eye protection.
    • Notify facility infection control personnel and your organization if you have a patient/individual who is at risk for 2019-nCoV.
Additional Information:
  • This is an emerging, rapidly evolving situation and there is much more to learn about this virus. DOI Office of Occupational Safety and Health, in conjunction with NPS Office of Public Health and Office of Law Enforcement, Security, and Emergency Services are closely monitoring this situation and will continue to provide guidance to DOI employees as it becomes available.
