New Rec on Wheels Program Brings Play and Fun to Rural Coconino County Communities

COCONINO COUNTY — Coconino County Parks and Recreation (CCPR) and Health and Human Services (CCHHS) have teamed up to provide Rec on Wheels, a new program that brings recreation opportunities, especially for youth, to the rural and outlying communities in Coconino County.

Events are free to the public and include games, drop-in programming, and even movies.

Coconino County is the second largest county by landmass in the United States and covers diverse landscapes, regions, and cultures. Rec on Wheels helps connect the distant regions of our county to recreation resources that provide fun, outdoor play, and promote health and wellness.

CCPR and CCHHS obtained a grant which allowed for the purchase of a variety of recreation equipment, including sporting goods, yard games, board games, a portable mini golf set, and an outdoor movie projector. These items are transported in the Rec on Wheels trailer, which includes a solar generator and power bank to support programming.

“Our children’s health is most important. They are the future, and we must do what we can to protect their futures, including their physical and mental health,” commented Lena Fowler, Coconino County Supervisor for District 5. “You can build strong family bonds and explore the connection between the importance of active play through the Rec on Wheels program as they visit towns, cities, and rural areas within Coconino County. Please take your family and enjoy the benefits of being a Coconino County resident!”

The launch of Rec on Wheels occurred May 6, 2023, at Louise Yellowman County Park in Tuba City. 80 people enjoyed the recreational opportunities provided to the community.

The next event is scheduled for Monday, June 5 at Peaks View County Park. More programs will be available throughout the summer and will be promoted prior to the events on CCPR’s Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/coconinoparksandrec
